Lawmakers continue to work on state budget

BY LAURA WEBER, MICHIGAN PUBLIC RADIO NETWORK

Lawmakers in the state House are deciding whether to push sessions through the night as budget disputes worsen.

It was a hurry-up-and-wait day at the state Capitol as some budget committees appeared to be at a stalemate. Democratic state Representative Fred Durhal sits on the General Government budget committee. He says the Senate Republicans plan to deeply cut on local government revenue sharing goes too far and would threaten the viability of at least 20 cities.

"Unless the Senate Republicans can bring some revenues to the table, then we have very little - at this point - that we can talk about."

And that's the tone in Lansing - Senate Republicans expect the Democratic-controlled House to stick to a budget balanced with cuts alone, and Democrats say it's time to start talking about new revenue streams to fund some programs.
And with the discussions slowed to a snail's pace, the House is expected to be waiting to vote on budgets through tomorrow.
