MPSC says Michigan could see drop in heating costs

The Michigan Public Service Commission says Michigan Residents could see a drop in heating costs this winter.

Last winter experts said the temperatures were colder than usual.  There are conflicting reports, but weather specialists with the Michigan Public Service Commission have calculated that temperatures this year will return to normal and even have the potential to become warmer.
As a result consumers could see a direct drop in heating prices because they'll be using their furnaces less.

Judy Palnau is with the MPSC.  She says the state's ability to save natural gas is another reason prices will drop.

"Michigan is one of the few states that has natural underground storage to it.  So Michigan customers always benefit form the fact that our utilities are able to buy this gas in the summer when prices are typically down and store it for use in the winter.  And the storage level is at one hundred percent at this point so we are benefiting from the falling price of natural gas and the ability to store it."

Recent reports from the national weather service have forecast a different picture.  Due to a milder El Nino system this winter, they calculate that this winter colder than last year.
